Project Concept:
Rapid industrialization, urbanization and population growth in the developing world has
increased morbidity and mortality due water and food-borne pathogens. It is now understood
that the genome repertoire of pathogens undergoes subtle fine-tuning by dissemination of
anti-microbial agent resistance genes as well as environmental factors. This demands new
strategies for pathogen detection since classical techniques are labor intensive, time
consuming and not always reliable. We are exploring development of real-time PCR probes,
Gold Nano-Particle Probes, PCR arrays and Biochips for detection of virulence genes of
pathogenic microbes in water and food.

Positions: TWO
Job Description: To develop oligonucleotide based biochips as diagnostic tool for
detection of pathogens and genetic diseases.

Embryotoxicology Division, Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow.
Project synopsis:
In recent years, there has been increased awareness of the possible effects of environmental
contaminants on male fertility with a trend towards decreased semen quality, affecting the
quality of reproduction. Epidemiological studies suggest a correlation of male infertility with
the presence of chemicals or their metabolites in the seminal fluid in India and across the
world. The proteins present in the human seminal fluid are essential for the maintenance of
sperm function. Despite their importance, there is only modest information on mechanism(s)
by which different chemicals affect semen quality. Drosophila provides a suitable model for
such mechanistic studies and by employing various molecular, genetic and biochemical
techniques, effects of different xenobiotics on certain classes of seminal fluid molecules
conserved at least at the structural level between Drosophila and mammals will be
investigated. Development of this system will help to provide a new, rapid, and economical
Drosophila bioassay useful in the preliminary screening of chemicals for their potential to
induce reproductive toxicity.
